I have had the chance to read some wonderful short stories by Chekov in the English translation and O'Henry's surprise endings and comedy in sadness never fail to surprise me. The factor of irony in life is brought out wondrfully in his Mammon and the Archer. The vanity of a sad ex-outlaw he describes in Vanity and the Sables, makes a poignant read too.
